Three ways to improve the way we talk to ourselves!
The way you talk to yourself can really impact your confidence, your self-esteem and your mindset. The effect can be good or bad depending on whether your self-talk is positive or negative. Heres a few ways you can improve your self-talk, the way you talk to yourself, below.
What is self-talk?
Even though you might not know it, you talk to yourself all the time. If you are conscious of this trait, you then have the power to make changes. I like to think about self talk as that quiet inner voice in your head.
Your inner voice, the voice in your mind, says the things to you that you don’t necessarily say out loud. This running commentary is going on in the background of our minds all the time. It can have a huge influence on how we feel about ourselves, our lives and who we are in the world.
The difference between positive and negative self-talk
Positive self-talk makes you feel good about yourself and the things that are going on in your life. It’s like having an optimistic voice in your head that always looks on the bright side. It always put a positive spin on things.
Examples: ‘I am doing really great’, ‘I can totally make it through this job interview’, ‘I don’t feel great right now, but things could be worse’
‘I am going to work out this issue’ I’m going to be just fine’
Negative self-talk makes you feel pretty horrible about yourself and the things that are going on. It can put a downer on anything, even something good. It always puts a negative spin on things!
Examples: ‘I should be doing better’, ‘Everyone thinks I’m stupid’, ‘Everything’s so bad, I
If you let negative self-talk become the permenant voice in your head then life can become pretty miserable. Negative self-talk can impact on recovery from mental health difficulties, recovery from illness, and it definitely impacts on our ability to develop life resilience. Negative self-talk is NOT helpful, but it may not be possible to be positive all the time, either. So, how do you change that voice in your head?
Why should I instigate a change in self talk?
Everyone learning something new starts at the beginning. Beginnings are not always easy. Change requires us to start outside our comfort zone. The more you work on improving your self-talk, the easier you’ll find it. It’s kind of like practising an instrument or going to the gym: it won’t be easy to start with, but you’ll get better with time.
It might not seem like much, but self-talk is a huge part of our self-esteem and confidence. By working on replacing negative self-talk with more positive self-talk, you’re more likely to feel in control of stuff that’s going on in your life and to achieve your goals.
Make the change today by replacing one sentence at a time. Start by looking in the mirror and telling yourself how great you really are. That one small change can start the bigger conversation in your head that makes all the difference in your life.
